KARACHI: Approximately 6.7 million people are currently suffering from Diabetes in Pakistan while worldwide 415 million people are suffering from Diabetes and this burden will increase to 642 million people by 2045.
The Indus Hospital celebrated World Diabetes Day on November 25 themed this year’s Diabetes Day ‘Eyes on Diabetes’ – aiming to promote the screening of patients to ensure early diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes.
This was stated by the Indus Hospital’s doctors in connection with World Diabetes Day.
According to experts, diabetes is a silent killer hence people should be made aware of health threat it poses to everyone. The current global health expenditure due to diabetes is approximately $548 billion and since it’s a life-long disease it puts huge burden of household – especially on poor people. They also informed that diabetes alone caused 5 million deaths worldwide in 2015.
Participants were taught about ways to diagnose, prevent, treat and manage diabetes during the awareness session at the hospital. The Indus Hospital’s Diabetes Management Programme (IHDMP) was developed and began its clinical services in September 2014 – which enrols all eligible diabetic patients and provides them with comprehensive and holistic diabetes management and care 100% free of cost.
It has enrolled over 2,700 diabetic patients to date and all these patients have received diabetes educational counseling and nutritional counselling. All the enrolled IHDMP patients have been screened for eye, foot and mental disorders. The average monthly visits of IHDMP clinic is up to 450 patients.
