KARACHI – Anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Karachi approved Mayor Waseem Akhtar’s bail in a case against his provocative speech.
The interned mayor, facing trial in 39 cases in the ATCs, obtained bail in 37 cases. The court directed him to submit surety bond worth Rs100, 000.
Akhtar – arrested in July – was accused of ordering a crackdown on city riots that resulted in a bloody massacre on May 12, 2007, when he was serving as provincial home minister.
He also faced charges of treason, sheltering and providing medical treatment to alleged militants and criminals.
