KARACHI – An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) on Saturday issued a non-bailable arrest warrant for former Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) leader Anees Qaimkhani in a case against Dr Asim Hussain on charges of providing medical aid to terrorists.
Anees Qaimkhani, Rauf Siddiqui, Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader Qadir Patel and others are also nominated in the case. During the hearing, the ATC asked the investigation officer as to why Qaimkhani could not be arrested. The court remarked Qaimkhani has returned to the country, directing the investigation officer to arrest him.
On the occasion, the MQM leader Rauf Siddiqui argued that a medical report has declared Dr Asim ‘mentally unfit’. “How we could be nominated in the case on the testimony of a mad person?” he questioned.
The ATC judge forbid Siddiqui to call Dr Asim a ‘mad person’, saying the accused is under treatment. Later, the court issued non-bailable arrest warrant for Qaimkhani. The warrant issued two days after Qaimkhani along with former Karachi mayor Mustafa Kamal returned to country from Dubai. Both the leaders held a hard-hitting press conference in Karachi against MQM chief Altaf Hussain and announced formation of a new political party.
